Finally making some progress

Things have been very up and down for me since I moved house and also turned to part time leaving a larger dependance on money from the business. Things are starting to pick up quite well in the web development side of things but one weird thing we have noticed is now how people are starting to “shop around” for who to design their website and the $$ factor is playing a very weird role. We have lost opportunitys from what we have been told due to our pricing (which mind you is still very competitive for what we offer). Now first up you would think we must be pricing too high, but it isn’t just that, we have had clients that nearly didn’t go with us because they thought we were too cheap. It really comes down to the old you get what you pay for theory but we are developing ways in which we can differentiate ourselves from other ‘web design businesses’ and give new clients a better reason to choose us.

Business issues aside but still on web design. I came across (from my fave news site Digg) a very nice article about web design trends. I have always spoke to others about how there are trends in web design much like the fashion industry and this article puts a lot of this into perspective much better then my words. From what I have generally seen the web design trends infact set the trends early for design for mainstream media like TV and magazines. Some people may disagree but I certainly have seen some good examples especially on Big Brother promo material and quite a bit of Channel 10 promo material as well.
